February 2011
Hang in there! Winter is over half over. I am a few days away from heading to Florida for the Saddlefit
4 Life Professionals Training and really getting excited. At the very least when I get back I will be able
to do Saddle Fit Diagnosis & Evaluations. Then there are possibilities of doing an internship with
Jochen to become a certified saddle fitter. Meanwhile, as an instructor, my hands are tied when a
student is riding in a saddle that will not let her be in the proper riding position. And as a trainer, I
can't help the horses if the rider can't be in the proper position to communicate with the horse. I can't
wait to get back and get started helping horses with their people and their saddles.
GOOD REPORTS
Julia Chain got a new horse, Dandy a 9 year old TB gelding. Congratulations Julia & enjoy !!
PA HORSE WORLD EXPO FEB. 24-27
There are some really great instructors coming to Harrisburg this year, Jane Savoie, Colleen Kelly,
Lynn Palm, Peggy Brown and Susan Harris! Susan Harris has a mind like a text book and in fact
has written many of them. She is a legend. Her demonstration with Peggy Brown, The Visible Rider
is very enlightening. Go see Jane Savoie for an attitude adjustment, I guarantee she will inspire you.
I have been working with Colleen Kelly on Rider Biomechanics for a couple years now. Her
demonstrations are an experience that you won't want to miss even if you don't ride. Lynn Palm is
also a legend and comes back every year probably by popular demand.
With all these great teachers right here in our back yard, I strongly encourage you to go to the Expo
this year. I'm not even going to try to compete with them. I have a booth no lectures or demonstrations.
Go see them, listen and learn. And when you are not busy with the clinicians, stop by and see me at
Booth #419. I have a little gift for you if you can find your picture in my display.
SCHLEESE SADDLE FITTING
Jochen Schleese will be here again on April 3, 2011 for saddle fittings. Riders must pre-register on
their website.

Since the Expo is coming up in a couple of weeks, I would like to share this link with you.
http://www.richardshrake.com/Bridle_Wise_Article.htm?m=71
In this article, Richard Shrake is basically saying be careful who you listen to. And I am saying be
careful who you watch. Even if you sit and watch something you know is totally wrong, you are absorbing
it into your subconcious. Visualization is very powerful and it can work for you and against you. Only watch
what is good. A lot of what we see at the Expos is entertainment more then educational. Some of it like
Tommie Turvey is very good. If you haven't seen him, make sure you don't miss your chance.
Unfortuneately, I see the crowds go towards the entertaining seminars more and less towards the
educational seminars. As an instructor, this upsets me because the Expo is an awesome opportunity
for us to learn more about our horses and how to communicate with them. The cost is very little when
you consider the level of clinicians offered.
My biggest concern is for the beginners that love their horses and want to do "everything right" and listen
to the wrong advice. Or worse, everyone gives different advice and confuses horses and their owners.
Like Richard says, look at their credentials.
George Morris said "the rules of classical horsemanship can never be broken." For those of you that
are my age and grew up in the english riding world, no explanation is needed. You know that because
George Morris said it, it is gospel. That's the way it's always been. But not all of us grew up with George
Morris. Not all of us are even interested in jumping (George's Morris' speciality) so why, do you care or
listen to his advice?
The rules of classical horsemanship can never be broken because they are there to protect the horse,
to build him up, mentally and physically. The rules are in place to develop a safe, sound, trained, happy,
obedient horse that will last a long time. Note: A long time is closer to 20 years then 2 or 3.
Developing a horse takes time. No, it takes a lot of time. A little bit every day or every other day, week
after week, month after month. If you think it can be done in 30 or 60 days, you are lying to yourself.
In 2007, Stacey Westfall won the Road to the Horse, a colt breaking contest. She kept the horse she
used to win the contest. An article was published the following year and in it she says "After six months
of hard work, the gelding is on his way to becoming a finished riding horse." She won the contest! Then
took him home and worked him for another 6 months. She is a very good professional trainer and she
says he's on his way. My point is it doesn't happen over night, what Stacey can do it 6 months would
probably take most people a year & a half because of work, weather and real life stuff.
My advice, follow the rules and take your time. If you always do what you know you are suppose to do,
it will work out. If you don't know what you are suppose to do, ask for help.
This month's link to share comes from Dorothy.
I am a huge believer in the swirls too. Check it out.

THE 5 BEST THINGS ABOUT WINTER
1. The horses can go out all day without being bothered by flies. Unless the fields are covered with an
inch of ice.
2. I don't have to mow or weed wack. Grass and weeds can't live in these temperatures anyway.
3. No worries about the horses being out at night during thunderstorms. Yea but I really don't want them
out all day in snow storms either.
4. No worries about the horses eating too much grass. But grass would keep them from chewing on the
fence so much.
5. Snow makes all the horses coats & feet clean. Picking the snow out of those clean
feet isn't much fun though.
Best things about winter never mind. How many days until spring?
Thank you for taking the time to read my little newsletter and for your feedback and comments. I really
do appreciate the opportunity to be a part of your riding goals. Keep in touch.
